Fixing Mac OS X Leopard’s Self-Assigned IP Issue
My main road machine is a Powerbook, which I recently pushed up to Leopard. Bit afterward I started having an issue when connecting to new networks, even one’s I had used in the past and set as favorites: OS X was giving itself a self-assigned IP. Been having this problem too? Here’s a quick System Preferences setting hack to fix it:
1. Go to System Preferences > Security > Firewall >Advanced
2. Make sure ‘Enable Stealth Mode’ is unchecked. Nice feature, but partially responsible for what’s screwing up your IP.
3. Hit ‘OK’ from the Advanced screen to get back to System Preferences > Security > Firewall. Select ‘Allow all incoming connections’.
4. Go to System Preferences > Network >Advanced > TCP/IP. If your router hasn’t already smartened up, recognized your Mac and assigned it a network IP, hit ‘Renew DHCP Lease’ to do so.
5. Hit ‘OK’, then go back to System Preferences > Security > Firewall and return the incoming connection setting to whatever you want it to be. You may be able to also turn Stealth Mode back on, but I don’t. Because I’m pretty sure until they come up with a patch, Stealth is the feature that’s causing this issue.
Took me a while to paste together suggestions on the forums to figure this method for my machine. Your mileage may vary.
